French Press Coffee

A classic method of brewing coffee by steeping ground coffee in hot water and separating the grounds using a metal mesh filter.

Preparation Time

  • Prep: 5 mins
  • Brew: 4 mins
  • Total: 10 mins

Ingredients

  • 16g coffee beans (medium-coarse grind)
  • 300g hot water (93°C/200°F)

Equipment Needed

  • French Press
  • Coffee grinder
  • Scale
  • Kettle
  • Timer

Instructions

  1. Heat water to 93°C (200°F)
  2. Grind coffee beans to medium-coarse consistency (about 18 clicks on standard grinder)
  3. Pre-heat French Press by rinsing with hot water and discard the rinse water
  4. Add ground coffee to the French Press
  5. Pour hot water over the grounds, saturating them evenly
  6. Place lid on top without pressing down the plunger
  7. Let steep for 4 minutes
  8. Slowly press the plunger down to separate grounds from coffee
  9. Pour immediately into cups to prevent over-extraction

Notes

  • Use freshly ground coffee for best results
  • Water temperature is crucial - too hot will make bitter coffee
  • Don’t leave brewed coffee in the French Press as it will continue to extract
  • Grind size should be coarse like sea salt
  • Clean the French Press thoroughly after each use
  • For stronger coffee, use more grounds; for weaker, use less
