Smoked Cheddar Grilled Cheese Sandwich

A gourmet grilled cheese sandwich featuring smoked cheddar, tart Granny Smith apple, and grainy Dijon mustard on sourdough bread.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 slices sourdough bread
  • 1/2 Granny Smith apple, cut into 1/4 inch thick slices
  • 4 ounces smoked cheddar, cut into 1/2 inch thick slices
  • 1 tablespoon grainy Dijon mustard

Instructions

  1. Butter both sides of the bread slices
  2. Spread grainy Dijon mustard on one side of each slice
  3. Layer cheese slices on top of the mustard side of each slice of bread
  4. Layer apple slices on top of the cheese slices on one of the slices of bread
  5. Take the slice without apples and flip it over on top of the apple slice
    • Apple slices should be sandwiched between cheese slices
  6. Cook on lightly greased skillet over medium-high heat
    • Cook until bread is toasty brown and cheese is melted
    • About 4-6 minutes per side
  7. Serve immediately

Notes

  • Best served hot while cheese is still melted
  • Can use any smoked cheddar brand
  • Sourdough bread provides nice tang and holds up well
  • Granny Smith apple adds tartness and crunch
  • Can adjust mustard amount to taste
